The documentary “The Last First: Winter K2” is now available to Apple TV subscribers. The film has also opened recently in selected theaters.

It centers on a 2021 expedition to Mount Godwin-Austen, better known as K2. The climbers set out to become the first team to reach the summit during winter, when conditions on the mountain are at their harshest.

The winter expedition team

The story follows Icelander John Snorri Sigurjónsson and the Pakistani father-and-son team of Ali and Sajid Sadpara. During the ascent, they share the route with influencer climbers and their film crews, commercial expedition clients and a Nepalese team no longer content with helping Western climbers claim mountaineering glory.

The documentary examines extreme climbing through strategy, determination, class, caste, money and power, all in circumstances where decisions carry life-and-death stakes.
