Anthropic releases Claude Opus 5.5, priced 40% below Opus 5
Anthropic has released Claude Opus 5.5, about two months after the previous Opus upgrade. The company says the model improves coding performance while costing 40% less than Opus 5 on typical workloads.
Anthropic has released Claude Opus 5.5, the latest version of the largest and most expensive model in its main Claude lineup. The launch comes about two months after the previous Opus upgrade.
Anthropic says Opus 5.5 produces output more than 30% faster than Opus 5, while typical workloads cost 40% less.
Coding benchmark results
According to Anthropic, an early tester completed a 680,000-line code migration in less than a day. Another audited and fixed a 200,000-line codebase in under three hours, compared with more than 20 hours for Opus 5.
In an internal test translating HAProxy from C to Rust, Opus 5.5 finished in 9.5 hours versus 12 hours for Fable 5.1. Both rewrites passed nearly all of HAProxy’s regression tests, while Anthropic said the Opus 5.5 version cost 51% less.
On FrontierCode, Anthropic says the model outperformed GPT-6 Astra at about 20% of its cost per task. On Terminal Bench 4.0, it matched Astra at roughly 40% of the cost, while on CursorBench it scored 11 points higher than GPT-5.6 Sol for about one-third of the price.
Pricing and availability
Opus 5.5 costs $4 per million input tokens and $20 per million output tokens. Cache reads cost $0.20 per million tokens, which Anthropic describes as a 60% reduction from Opus 5.
The model is available now. Anthropic is also increasing five-hour usage limits for Pro, Max and Team plans and giving subscribers rate-limit resets that can be saved and used when needed.
Anthropic says external evaluators, including METR and Frontier Design, tested the model before release. The company calls Opus 5.5’s result on its most comprehensive alignment test the strongest to date, but the performance figures in the source are claims from Anthropic and early testers.
