Adobe launches free Premiere app for Android with up to 4K video editing

Adobe has released Premiere for Android on Google Play. The app is available for almost all Android devices and does not require a Creative Cloud account for basic editing.

Users can import unlimited video tracks, trim and split clips, add effects, extract audio, reduce background noise and record voiceovers. Videos can be exported at up to 4K resolution.

Editing on phones and foldables

The interface is designed for different form factors: on a standard smartphone, the timeline sits below the preview window. On foldable phones, the app can place the timeline to the right, and users can adjust the division manually.

Premiere emphasizes YouTube Shorts and defaults to portrait video, but users can select a wider format. Adobe also says the app is optimized for Chromebook laptops.

Performance and compatibility

The app is designed for Android devices with at least 5GB of RAM. In testing, it handled several high-bitrate 4K clips without failing, although processing newly added tracks could take about a minute.

Exporting a three-minute 4K60 video in high-quality mode took about three minutes on a Pixel smartphone.

AI tools require separate payment

The basic Premiere app is free. Its image-to-video and text-to-video tools include 250 AI credits per month; a Veo Fast clip costs 80 credits, while a Firefly video requires more than the free allocation provides.

A paid plan costs $8 per month or $70 per year and provides 1,200 monthly AI credits. Adobe lists Firefly, Google Veo, Google Omni, Luma Ray and Kling among the available models.

The Android version has fewer features than desktop Premiere but offers more editing tools than Premiere Rush, which Adobe is preparing to retire. Premiere for Apple devices was released last year.
