Microsoft has introduced Project Zenith, a Windows 11 version designed for developers and local artificial-intelligence workloads. The company has not disclosed pricing or a release schedule.

The minimum requirement is 64GB of unified memory with bandwidth above 250GB/s. Microsoft says this is enough to run models with more than 30 billion parameters locally.

Developer-focused defaults

Project Zenith pins Windows Terminal and Visual Studio Code to the taskbar. File Explorer shows file extensions and hidden files by default, displays the full path in the title bar and supports long paths.

The system disables recent folders and files, sync-provider tips, Start menu suggestions and account notifications. A command list will be available through Search and Start.

Local AI agents

Microsoft presents Project Zenith as a platform for locally developing software for AI models and agents. Its Microsoft Execution Containers technology is intended to isolate those agents at the operating-system level.

The company also says small models for vibe coding could reduce developers’ reliance on cloud services, with local agents handling routine tasks and cloud models handling more demanding workloads.

Initial hardware plans

The first Project Zenith devices will use AMD Ryzen AI Halo. Microsoft says systems from other manufacturers will follow in the coming months, while possible future configurations include NVIDIA RTX Spark and Gorgon Halo.

Microsoft says Project Zenith could theoretically run on mini PCs and laptops.
